The entire fort is in a massive lake of lava, and the only way in or out of the castle is through a crystal gateway in the docks (or by swimming... whichever you prefer.)
The crystal gate that will take you to Dark Ebonheart is in Seyda Neen near the lighthouse. A high level is recommended (either that or a good cheat) because it isn't easy.
