NAM:WAW Vietnam Map - Lao Cai 1.0

The first deadly encounter began on the afternoon of September 7, when volleys of rockets and artillery slammed into the Marine positions. Waves of NVA infantry closely followed, threatening to overrun the embattled leathernecks.

Three understrength companies India, Kilo and Mike, battled elements of the NVA 812th Regiment throughout the long night. Finally, toward morning the fighting tapered off and the NVA withdrew to lick their wounds.

The haggard Marine survivors emerged from their fighting positions to find a battlefield littered with more than 100 NVA bodies. The struggle had not been without cost: 20 Marines had been killed in action, while another 70 were wounded.

The map has a medium to large size and it will support DM, TDM, SD, HQ, DOM, SAB, CTF, TWAR ( ASS, GG, CH in NAM:WAW ) game types.

NAM:WAW Vietnam Map - Marsh 3.0

US soldiers proceeded cautiously through the jungle wetlands west of Pleiku, near the Cambodian border, on the morning of May 18, 1967. The men were part of Operation Francis Marion, aimed at stopping the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) from seizing the Ia Drang Valley.

The Americans belonged to B Co., 8th Inf., 1st Bde., 4th Inf. Div. Most were young, and many were new to Vietnam. But they all were about to become seasoned warriors. The enemy would attack in groupings that vastly out-numbered the Americans.

On January 30, 1968, the North Vietnamese surprised both the U.S. forces and the South Vietnamese by orchestrating a coordinated assault with the Viet Cong to attack about a hundred South Vietnamese cities and towns.

Although the U.S. forces and the South Vietnamese army were able to repel the assault known as the Tet Offensive, this attack proved to Americans that the enemy was stronger and better organized than they had been led to believe. The Tet Offensive was a turning point in the war.

NAM:WAW Vietnam Map - Tunnels 1.0

The tunnels of Cu Chi are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Cu Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country.

The Cu Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tet Offensive in 1968. The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous guerrilla fighters.

The role of the tunnel systems should not be underestimated in its importance to the Viet Cong in resisting Australian operations and protracting the war, eventually persuading the weary Australians into withdrawal.

NAM:WAW Vietnam Map - Duong Ong 2.0

In June 1969 5RAR fought one of the last large-scale actions of the Australian war, during the Battle of Binh Ba five km north of Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy province. The battle was unusual in the Australian experience, involving close-quarter house-to-house fighting through the village of Binh Ba against a combined force of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army.

For the loss of one Australian killed at least 91 VC/NVA were killed and 11 captured in a hard fought but one-sided engagement. Such large-scale battles were not the norm in Phuoc Tuy province however.

Indeed losses suffered at Binh Ba forced the NVA to move out of Phuoc Tuy into adjoining provinces and although the Australians did encounter main force units in the years to come, the Battle of Binh Ba marked the end of such clashes.

NAM:WAW Vietnam Map - Radio Relay 2.0

The Vietnam War was the longest major conflict in which Australians have been involved; it lasted ten years, from 1962 to 1972, and involved some 60,000 personnel. A limited initial commitment of just 30 military advisers grew to include a battalion in 1965 and finally, in 1966, a task force. Each of the three services was involved, but the dominant role was played by the Army.

Australians in Vietnam could be involved in several types of combat. fighting at close quarters and engaging in regular combat, they were frequently in danger. For the most part these Australians in Vietnam experienced combat either in or above rural or jungle locales against experienced and skilled opponents.
